Reply with quote | #1 | Greetings,
Well my trailer is all most ready and the truck has good brakes so it may be this year that I take my dad riding on the battlefields of Gettysburg. Anyone been there done that? Anyone want to go? |

That's something I've never done although I've done battle astride with the Rebs for 3 days in July. Viewing the battle sites on the back of a horse sounds like a relaxing and informative thing to do. The battlefields are beautiful and impressive. Has anyone done it? __________________ Marvin Glassmann |

Reply with quote | #3 | Yes, I've done it about six times. It has been a number of years since I have done it and I know the trails have changed since I've been there, but it is a moving and wonderful experience.
If you know the battle and understand what you are looking at the time you spend is enhanced.
The stable there is a wonderful resource. You can camp there with your horses. They also have little cabins. Be sure to have your Coggins up to date. They may or may not have openings as it is a popular thing to do. Avoid the time of the great battle July 1-4 as the place is crowded and you won't get in.

Reply with quote | #4 | The name of the stable is Artillery Ridge on Taneytown Rd. Bill U will remember the guys name. It escapes me now. Say hello to him from all of us. The last time we visited was with Don Reddy. the best time weather-wise is in the fall, when it is not so hot.

I guess it can be done when it gets cooler. What do you think? __________________ Marvin Glassmann |

Well, we finally did it, that is rode the battlefields of Gettysburg! We brought 3 horses and one for each of us and one for the guide, whose name , would you believe it was Andy CUSTER.Her husband's uncle or great uncle was a contemporary of General George. She was a very informed woman about all aspects of the 3 day battles as well as the geological formations. We presented different perspectives of some of the battles, different from those that we are familiar with in particular, Pickette's (sp?) Charge. We all had such a good time that Andy, if we wanted to see more, and when we assented, we got 2 more hours gratis. Since we brought our own horses, the cost was only $50 for the 2 of us. We saw tour groups comprised of almost 12 riders, each with a receiver in their ear, so they could hear the guide who was up front. We even saw a tour group riding Segways, you know those 2 wheel devices that you ride standing up. So we had a great time, Andy the guide, Steve my son, a former director of NSHA and myself on this sunny sparkling bright day. Thanks Steve. __________________ Marvin Glassmann |
